Unexpected Treasure in the City of Pearls
I recently spent some time in the Indian city of Hyderabad, and enjoyed a day shooting in the markets and bazaars around the Charminar Monument and the Mecca Masjid Mosque on the south bank of the Musi River. It wasn’t a particularly productive day in terms of photography, although I did enjoy walking through the old lanes talking to the vendors and residents, who were unfailingly friendly and welcoming. Eventually, I decided to call it a day, and headed back to my hotel in an auto-rickshaw. I had more or less stopped thinking about photography, my thoughts turning to dinner and a cold beer, when I happened to see this guy sitting outside his home engrossed in reading the newspaper. I just had time to squeeze off one frame from the moving tuk-tuk in which I was travelling as the light was fading. The photograph above ended up being my favourite image of the day, and was a reminder that sometimes the best photographs happen when you are least expecting them.
Here are a couple more images from that trip to Hyderabad, shot on a different day….
