This shot is also from New York – this time, a candid grab shot of a guy ‘chilling out’ on a bench in Manhattan. I’m not sure whether he was actually asleep or just deep in thought – hard to tell with those shades on – but either way, definitely a man who knows the true meaning of the word relaxation. If ever I feel stressed and need to unwind, this is my ‘go-to’ picture…

I love these type of grab shots where you can just catch people in their unguarded moments doing (sometimes) the strangest things.
It always makes me wonder what goes through their minds…
Nicely composed photograph too.
Thanks Steve – I also get a lot of pleasure from this kind of photography, where gesture is the most important element. This image for me is all about gesture (in combination with the weather); it’s not about the light; and although the composition works for me too, it’s not what makes the image either. I like the essential uniqueness of this moment, and the fact that I was fortunate to be there to record it. I guess that’s at least part of what makes street photography so rewarding.
Ian,
I agree with you wholeheartedly that that it is the uniqueness of the moment that stands out in this image -it isn’t everyday you come upon someone sitting (asleep?)on a park bench in the snow! As someone with a natural bias toward street photography myself, I know how rewarding these unexpected, unguarded moments can be. We as photographers place a value on those moments that are overlooked by others.
The challenge for us is that each moment itself is unique, is it not,and I guess the ‘art’ and point of street photography is finding that defining moment of uniqueness and capturing it as you have done, so well, here.
Steve
P.S I guess you’re already aware of her – Vivian Maier. I find her to be an extraordinary example of a street photographer.
Great title! He’s certainly chillin in many ways. Great moment to be there
Thanks Lisa!
