The Engraver

Wandering through the labyrinth of ancient lanes around Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, last week, I stumble across a dimly lit corner workshop, open to the street. A man is working inside, engraving words in metal. He looks up, sees me, and beckons me in. It feels strange, almost as if he is an old […]

One from the Archive #5 – Old Delhi, India

Here’s another image from a while back which I have just re-processed as I felt originally I didn’t do justice to the raw file.  This portrait was shot on a blisteringly hot and humid August day in a Sufi shrine in Old Delhi, India. I made a sequence of eighteen photographs of this man, and […]

One from the Archive #4 – Old Delhi, India

Here's the fourth image in my series of 'ones which got away' the first time around. I did like this image at the time I shot it, but just couldn't get it looking right in colour. I remember at the time I made this photograph that I was reluctant to drop the colour and convert to monochrome because one of the things that appealed to me about the image was the conceptual contrast between the bright, cheerful colours in her headscarf and her apparently unfriendly demeanour- compounded by the dark Ray Bans, which masked any warmth and humanity I might have been able to see in her eyes. So I left this one, and it lay forgotten in the archive for a long time until I happened upon it again a few days ago. Coming to the raw file with fresh eyes, I decided to re-visit the possibility of converting the image to black and white, and realised that I liked the image better in the absence of colour after all. Although the conceptual contrast I mentioned above was missing, the starkness and mood of the low-key black and white rendering was sympathetic to her expression.

One from the Archive #3 – Old Delhi, India

Continuing with the theme of re-editing old images, here's another one from Old Delhi (which, as you've probably gathered by now, is a place where I love making street portraits).  One of the reasons for re-editing the image was because I wanted to see it in black & white - although I did tweak the colour edit too.  I'm posting the colour version along with the monochrome one, and I'd love to know which of the two versions you think works best. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the colour version.  Please leave a comment, message me on Facebook, or drop me an email and let me know what you think.

One from the Archive #2 – Old Delhi, India

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was in the process of re-editing a number of old images where I wasn’t happy with the original editing I did.  Here’s the second image I recently re-processed – while I liked it at the time, with the benefit of experience, the original version looks over-edited.  This time, […]
